The Grip Master – FAQ
Here is a list of many of the most frequently asked questions about The Grip Master grips. This will be updated on a regular basis (hopefully!) and if you have any questions about The Grip Master, please fell free to send us a message.
Q. What is the difference between the regular ROO and the Tour Edition?
A. The two grips are identical in leather, material, size, and weight. The only difference is the Tour Edition has a white mouth and butt cap.
Q. What is the difference between the Classic Wrap D-Slim and Tour putter grips?
A. The Tour putter grip is like the Ping PP58 Tour putter grip that Tiger Woods has been using for years. The D-Slim putter grip is a classic leather-shaped putter grip, round with a narrow flat section along the front — very similar to the one used on the famous Wilson 8802 putter.
Q. What’s the difference between Roo Sewn and Roo Laced Swinger grips?
A. The Sewn is stitched along the spine, creating a subtle rib. The Laced is laced together like a baseball bat, creating a more pronounced rib that doubles as an alignment aid.
Q. Which grip is best for hot and humid conditions?
A. Our tackiest grip is the Roo Swinger, infused with our proprietary tackifier. It’s ideal for humid or sweaty conditions and lasts 3–4 years.
Q. What’s the difference between Roo and Kidd Swinger grips?
A. The Roo is made from Kangaroo leather and is the most tacky thanks to our proprietary tackifier. The Kidd Sewn is made from Ethiopian Kidd leather, which is still a durable and nice-feeling leather, but the Roo is our most popular and most premium model due to the Kangaroo leather, tackiness, and durability.
Q. Which Grip Master putter grip is most similar to the Scotty Cameron/Winn Matador Midsize?
A. The Midsize Pistol grip is the closest option, though dimensions aren’t identical.
Q. Which Grip Master putter grip is most similar to the Lamkin Deep Etch?
A. The Tour size putter grip is most similar.
Q. What’s the difference between the Roo Sewn, Roo Tour, and Roo Laced models?
A. The Roo Sewn is the standard model, available in multiple sizes and colors. The Roo Tour is the same as Sewn but with a white mouth and butt cap. The Roo Laced uses lacing instead of sewing, creating a more pronounced rib for alignment.
Q. What’s the difference between the Roo and the Classic Wrap grips?
A. The Roo is tacky, impregnated with tackifier, and durable for 3–4 years. The Classic Wrap is smooth, traditional leather, and not tacky.
Q. What are the differences between your putter grip models?
A. Grip sizes from smallest to largest: Tour → Midsize → Paddle → FL27 → FL28 → FL35. Leather options include: Cabretta Laced (smooth, fashion leather, treated with beeswax) and Roo Laced (performance leather, tacky and durable with tackifier for 3–4 years).
Q. How do the fashion leather putter grips (Tiger Snake, Lizard, etc.) feel?
A. These are fashion leathers, so natural variations may occur. Tiger Snake is smooth and lightly waxed. Lizard is firmer, with scale texture, treated with beeswax.
Q. How many wraps of tape should I use with Roo grips?
A. Roo grips generally play about 2 wraps larger than standard rubber grips. Start with 1 wrap and adjust if needed.
Q. Can Roo or Kidd grips fit on a .610 shaft instead of .600?
A. Yes. Use 2 extra wraps at the butt end to soften the edge. If the shaft has a strong taper, build up the bottom hand for a parallel section.
Q. Can I build up the trail hand to reduce taper?
A. Yes, but we recommend a maximum of 2 wraps. More than that risks damaging the underlisting.
Q. Do Roo grips have less taper than rubber grips?
A. Yes. All Swinger models have reduced taper, about equivalent to +3 wraps in the bottom hand. Add 1 extra wrap under the top hand if you want to mimic a more traditional taper.
Q. Which Grip Master has the least taper?
A. All Swinger models share the same reduced-taper profile. To remove taper entirely, use 1 full wrap and 1 extra wrap under the bottom hand.
Q. Any tips for installing Roo grips with an air compressor?
A. Warm the grip mouth by rolling it between your palms. Add an extra wrap or double-sided tape at the butt end. Use a little solvent to help start the install. Recommended air pressure is ~100 psi. Installation Demo 1 | Demo 2
Q. My grip got stuck halfway during install on a Scotty Cameron. What should I do?
A. Debur and smooth the butt end of the shaft. Use 1 wrap full length + 2 extra wraps at butt end. Warm the grip mouth before installation. Apply plenty of solvent. If it catches, remove, reapply solvent, and soften the grip mouth. Detailed Install Video
Q. Can I remove Roo grips without cutting them?
A. Yes, compressed air is the best method. Grips installed with solvent/tape may be harder to save. Installation with air or rubber cement makes removal easier.
Q. How do I stop the butt cap from curling up?
A. Fold it back, apply a little superglue under the cap, and fold it back down.
Q. Can Roo grips be reused when moving to new clubs?
A. Yes, but removal is easiest with compressed air. Grips installed with solvent/tape may not survive removal. Rubber cement installation improves reusability.
Q. How do Roo sizes compare to Golf Pride Tour Velvets?
A. The butt diameter is similar to the Tour Velvet. The bottom hand feels like a Tour Velvet with +3 wraps.
Q. How do Roo grips compare to Best Grips Microperf?
A. The standard Roo is similar in butt diameter but has less taper, so the bottom hand feels larger.
Q. Which Roo is firmest?
A. The firmest model is the Master Sewn Large Perforation. Larger perforations reduce leather coverage, making it firmer.
Q. What is the weight of the FL43 putter grip?
A. Approximately 120 grams ±2 grams.
